Have you ever walked into somewhere and immediately felt like it could be special? A restaurant, a pub, a garden, a house. Somewhere that has a little unexpected x-factor. When wandering into the Capella Vineyard last year, I got some of those vibes. Maybe it was the pond; maybe it was the greenness. Whatever, this organic Mornington estate has a little magic, and it’s firmly borne out in the new Handpicked Capella Vineyard Pinot Noir 2022. Pinning my bias to the wall, I bloody love Mornington Peninsula Pinot Noir, so there’s that as a consideration, but I’d argue this is a star no matter your Aussie Pinot benchmarks. Glossy, limpid fresh, pure and raspberried, it’s pristine, light to medium bodied and seamless wine of effortless seamlessness. It feels right, in a very modern, sort of glossy, perfumed and pretty mode, but with the subtle tannin and grip to ensure you’re not just tasting fruit. The only negative is that it’s a bit tight, but I challenge you not to appreciate the perfect form. Yes yes yes.
