Perennially, I ask why aged Riesling isn’t a treasured good in this country, and perennially, we all navel gaze and move on. Or at least I do. This Harewood Estate Museum Release Porungurup Riesling 2014 is a prime example of the appeal – after ten (patient) years sitting in the winery cellar, it still looks young, sprightly and fresh. How great is aged Riesling? Eleventy great. There’s just a whisper of TDN here to bring you back to land and some nut butter creaminess. But the core of grapefruit and cooked lime is locked in, an immovable fruit object driving this whole wine. You can feel the bottle age, gnawing at the edges, trying to make it wider, but this remains a linear wine. Arguably, the finish is a bit too taut to be seductive, yet that’s part of the appeal here – a lovely fresh wine, even at ten years old, with an easy two decades ahead.

The best rieslings tasted on a long campervan trip through WA around 8 years ago were at Harewood.
The Harewood Riesling range is wonderful, year in, year out
