Every winery should have an experimental label. Every business should be constantly testing, experimenting, trying to improve, and all that. Logan Lab is the range designated for a bit of unconventional work for Pete Logan, and you know what? It throws up a few curveball funny business tasty wines. Actually Pete is an ex-chemist, so he knows about tinkering around making things wearing a lab coat. This is a barrel-fermented Orange Marsanne, which doesn’t happen (there can’t be much Marsanne planted in Orange), and it’s bloody fun. A spray of blossom honeysuckle fragrance, lovely gentle honey citrus through the middle, and a nice crisp, gently lemony finish. There’s a flirty, robust, ripe citrus Marsanne opulence at play here, but then a tight, lemon balm, high acid palate underneath. The contrast makes this a winner.

Will you also be reviewing the Petit Verdot that he whipped up in the Logan Lab ?
It’s in my pile!
That Marsanne block at Angullong was directly across from the Tempranillo block that I got to play with during my time at Ross Hill. Half the Marsanne block is now vermentino, but always wanted to get my hands on that Marsanne.
Interesting for it to be grafted over to Vermentino. Guess it sells better, hey. Marsanne in Aus is like the textural white promised land – hard to nail, and you always sit in the Tahbilk shadow. But so worth it when the stars align.
