It’s that time again. Time to inspire me to spend more money on drinks, even though the WineArk cabinet can’t be closed properly, and the Amex is maxed out.
So, what wine, beer, and other refreshing liquids have you been buying and drinking this month?
The bulk of the last four weeks has been spent in Italy and France, starting with a week of Vinitaly/Verona, then onto Champagne and Paris.
You’d think that I’d find a few things to buy in Parisian cavistes before I came home, right? Or at least duty-free? But nothing said ‘buy me’ and I didn’t have enough shopping time to do it justice (although the selection at a La Grande Épecerie de Paris was impressive).
What about you? Did you load up on Standish, or were you one of the lucky few to get some Giaconda in the three minutes it took for the wines to sell out?
Meanwhile, no Giaconda in Paris, but much 2023 Beaujolais was consumed…
Parisian bars are awash in Beaujolais. Despite 2023 being a problematic vintage in other parts of Italy/France, it’s a lovely vintage for making bright, energetic and absolutely delicious Beaujolais. They’re such drinkable wines too, especially when you get above basic villages-level wines, and for 6-8 euros a glass in a Marais bistro they’re wildly affordable drinks too.

On that theme, I very much enjoyed this Taupenot-Merme Saint Romain 2022 too. There’s a balance there between quite joyous golden fruit and tautness to make for such affable Burgundian drinking. Sure, it’s no La Montrachet, but the charisma vs price on this affordable Burg is so good.

This Domaine du Gros Nore Bandol 2015 was less affordable (€15 a glass at the excellent Divvino in Paris) but a joy. There’s the limitless ironstone and muscular blackness of Bandol Mourvedre, softening a bit, with this balance between savoury, withering dark fruit and something a bit more energetic carrying things so well.

On the beer front, a special mention to the Tête de chou taphouse in Epernay which had a rudely modern West Coast IPA brewed in the middle of Champagne country, and the La Ruée vers l’Orge, which was also a beacon of craft in Paris. The Osteria La Mandorla was also one of my fave places to drink in Verona helped by a clever range of tap beer and a lo-fi wine list worth lingering for (although the bar is tiny).
There was a shedload more less memorable wines in recent weeks (including an underwhelming Idda Gaja Bianco 2023 and a sadly oxidised Chateau Kefraya), but I’ll call this a pretty solid run of drinking highlights.
But what about you? Any value standouts in your April drinking? Let me know in the comments!

Long time lurker
Just pigtailing your Paris post. We recently took a trip out to Maisons Lafitte, just beyond Neuilly where we found in a bistro Margaux Le Petite Tour de Bessan at 9 euros per glass. Needless to say we had a couple, kicking ourselves for not ordering the bottle. Have never seen this in “au verre” in Paris. Maybe Bordeaux but not Paris.
For anyone heading to the nice village of Maisons Lafitte and its excellent small chateau, Cafe Cosy, right near the RER station. Food was good too, and because it was pissing down the name was apt.
Love those little finds. Really colours the whole travel experience. I remember a bottle of Cabardes feeling the same many years ago, where I was fascinated by this French red that I knew nothing about and was so cheap!
Not heading your way till June unfortunately but looking forward to hanging out with a sommelier buddy in Le Lavandou for a few days. Bandol is definitely on the radar – Domaine Tempier and a few others no doubt.
Back on the homefront opened my first 2020 Eisenstone McDonalds Block Marananga, what an absolute belter, really glad I gave it a 6 hour double decant.
2012 Brands Family Reserve CS and a 2014 CBD Shiraz, 2016 Coates Mourvedre, 2020 La Suffrene Rose, 2023 Mas de Bressades Rose (both really great). 2020 Noon Eclipse and 2012 Hippolyte Les Grenachieres (CdP). Nice tidy month.
Stocked up on the current release by Stephen Cook – X10, X11, X12, Marananga and Richardson Moppa.
Bought a hogshead of second pick TTW Squid Ink to share with buddies as a quaffer.
2023 Miles from Nowhere super premium Chardonnay for $30, nice mix of Gingin and racy Mendoza clones, great drinking at the price point.
A research paper by a young Brian Croser on the origins of Gingin is a really good read.
The Miles From Nowhere wines are typically such a bargain (and heavily discounted too). Glad you liked some of Stephen’s wines.
Bought Domenica Gamay, my fave red after his Nebb (matches cru Beaujolais imo) and did luckily snag a mix of Giaconda sonehow. Also grabed a few of the ’23 Lakes Folly cab blend as found it very impressive last year + great vintage for Hunter.
Drinking highlights- Marion Amarone ’18 by the glass at Letra House in Sydney, so balanced and complex. Also super taken by a “21 Kusuda Syrah. First time trying and what a gorgeous, elegant expression. Fave NZ Syrah for me though Bikancia does great work too.
Add Elephant Hill to that Syrah list too
Cheers Andrew, duly noted 🙂
Totally agree Elephant hill one of the best wineries we visited in Hawkes Bay last month
My standout in the month was 2023 Lethbridge Wines PinotGris Vaughan , raving about it.🤩🥰
Big call but the best Pinot Gris I’ve ever tasted but agree on limited range 😂
I haven’t had that wine in ages – glad to hear about a decent, non-cynical local Pinot Gris too.
