2012 McLaren Vale reds can be slightly challenging to assess now, purely because they are so youthful – they’re more like barrel samples then drink-now prospects, with so much sweet fruit and sweet oak that it feels criminal to be ripping them open.
Still, no questioning the inky lusciousness of wines such as this Hither & Yon, which has big, rich red written all over it.
The fruit sourcing is prime too – sourced from the Old Jarvie vineyard on Rifle Range road with the Cabernet from the Hither & Yon home vineyard on Sand rd, both of which lie just in the ‘Strout’ sub-district (according to my map reading) nearing the Willunga escarpment.

It looks and smells deep and fulll, inky purple in colour, the nose slick and thick over a youthful, blue and blackberry palate. Perhaps a fraction boozy, but that richness is pretty satisfying – powerful yet silky too.
Ultimately a full, rich, barrel sample of a wine but guaranteed to be a long lived one. Sure to please any big red lover.
