Punt Road Nehme Vineyard Botrytis Semillon 2013 (Griffith, NSW)
13.5%, Screwcap, $32 (500ml)
Curious wine this. Clearly tapping into the trend towards drier botrytis styles, it comes from the heart of ‘sticky country’ at the Nehme family vineyard at Yenda. 2013 was, by all accounts, a great year for botrytis in the Riverina, with harvest rains and floods creating solid botrytis conditions.
This certainly smells heavily botrytised, the nose really heavy with rot, without quite the marmalade unctuousness to carry that through. Ditto the palate which could do with more sweetness and less warmth. Ultimately the balance just isn’t there.
