Very well priced Hunter Semillon from Meerea Park. Again. This Meerea Park Hell Hole Semillon 2019 comes off the Lochleven Vineyard in Pokolbin and is very much built in a classic style. Celery and lemon citrus, acid and lemongrass. It’s thicker and more concentrated than expected, the effect upping the flavour depth and ultimately making this a smart fuller style.
Enjoyment here. Best drinking: now to ten plus years. I like it now, however. 18/20, 93/100. 11.5%, $30. Meerea Park website. Would I buy it? Worth a bottle.

That’s encouraging Andrew. Like you, I quite like Semillon when they are young, but the Hunter never seems quite sure how to “present” Semillon. The old Hunter barons loved it old and yellow, which is one of the reasons it is so out of fashion, where as the West Australians think its only role is as a blend to make Sauvignon Blanc presentable. However, when presented in the fashion you describe, it makes it sound very appealing. Will follow your recommendation and acquire a bottle.
I think this is a much more approachable style.
Years ago Jancis Robinson once described Hunter Semillon as akin to battery acid in its youth and that, with time, develops into lovely mature wines with a burnt toast character.
