This is the first Nebbiolo I’ve seen from the Ellis family’s dry-grown Gippsland vineyard (which can deliver great Pinot Noir & Chardonnay), with plenty of future Neb promise for the vineyard with this Bellvale Stone Ridge Nebbiolo 2019.
Spends 30 days on skins and 12 months in larger oak, which is a good formula for vibrant Nebbiolo. Fittingly, this is all lucid, glacé red fruit in a light and bright form. Light bodied, finely tannic and quite approachable. Needs more concentration for higher marks, but lovely pretty fruit. Future vintages could be great given the vitality and varietal character, just needs more intensity to be profound. Good.
Bellvale Stone Ridge Nebbiolo 2019. Best drinking: good for the next five years for a start. Drink it young and fresh. 17.5/20, 91/100. 13.5%, $45 direct from Bellvale (website). Would I buy it? A glass or so.
