The Nebbiolo Files: Quealy Pyrenees Nebbiolo 2012

Quealy Pyrenees Nebbiolo 2012

The final wine in a little trio of Australian Nebbiolo that I’ve been looking at over the week (a Pizzini and a Coriole).

This was the odd one out for this trio methinks, the younger vintage giving this more primary fruit, but also the style a little less about tannic power and more about prettiness and light touch.

Sourced from the Malakoff vineyard in the Pyreness I though that, from the outset it smells more.. purple. Less tar and rust and more plum and even a dash of mint. It held up this primary fruit all through the week, though the tannins were never quite on the same page as the other two.
Where this scored was that it didn’t taste as confronting as the other two – you could imagine a Neb virgin hooking into this and it will win friends easier. What it lacks is the trademark Nebbiolo tannins, ultimately making this nice, but not ‘sit by the fire with a glass’ complex.

Still impressive and well made, the lightness of touch admirable (I wonder if the amphora maturation helped?).Good. Promise for future releases = good.

Details: 13.5%, Screwcap, $40
Source: Sample, tasted February ’15
Best drinking: 2015-2022
Score: 17/20, 90/100
Would I buy it? I think a glass or so would be about right. Not a true cellaring option.
