Drink your good stuff; don’t let it sit in the cellar oxidising.
This is the Christmas mantra. Let’s drink better things during the festive season because when else will you do it? Especially in this house, where 11 months of the year, the diet is largely beer and samples (outside of special days).
So now it’s important to go long. To go fancy.
So what will it be? What better wine, beer, cocktails, spirits, etc will you drink this Christmas 2024?
There is only one constant for a Christmas drink in this house – there will be a bottle of Primo Estate Joseph Sparkling Red. I like this description of this unique sparkling best: ‘It’s a master stock of a wine that couples the punch and power of young McLaren Vale Cabernet, Merlot and Shiraz with a treasure-trove solera of old Aussie wine things.’
Some bloke called Andrew Graham wrote that.
This year, the Joseph Sparkling Red comes with controversy, as Primo has changed the iconic bottle. Like it?

What else? There’s a stack of Bollinger magnums that need opening, plus a cellar full of classic, slightly old-school faves in the ideal Christmas drinking zone. 2004 Wynns John Riddoch, 2009 Tyrrell’s Vat 1, 2010 Roda I Riserva, 2017 Raymond Lafon Sauternes, that sort of thing. Then, there are a few entertaining recently acquired drinks – 2014 Tissot Vin Jaune, 2021 d’Meure Chardonnay, 2021 Bindi Block 5, and some of the Azores Verdelho I was banging on about a little while back.
Otherwise, there is also a spread of non-wine things that need trying this Christmas, too – 12yo balsamic, some 2022 Hawkers Imperial Stout and a smorgasbord of Muscat of varying ages from a fortified project I’m involved with.
What about you? What will you drink this Christmas?

I had a bottle of the Frankland Estate Isolation Ridge riesling at a work lunch the other day. If i can get some more of that without having to get it delivered and without having to take out a second mortgage I will do so.
United Cellars offered me some of the ‘standard’ Frankland Estate Riesling (2022) and it was excellent. Tasted very young like a current release Clonakilla. Will keep for a couple of years and let settle down – was a decent discount on retail if that helps! I’ll be getting some more for sure
I didn’t know you were a balsamic tragic as well Andrew!
I have a 40ml bottle of Bonini Black 50 year old riserva I want to drop over some roast carrots at Christmas lunch
My list for this years shenanigans:
2012 Veuve Fourny Vintage
2008 Arras Grand Vintage
2012 Seppelt Show Reserve
Craiglee Sparkling Shiraz
2022 Sorrenberg Chardonnay
I dropped too many euros on Balsamic in Italy last year. Will do the same when I go back in April!
Meanwhile, Craiglee sparkling! Wow
Back home for the Christmas season I have already started with a 1979 Chateau d’Angludet. Served with rosemary and garlic butterfly leg of lamb, it was a lovely old claret with a beautiful classic Bordeaux nose.
For now, the special bottles I am considering are:
1998 Peter Lehmann ‘Black Queen’ Sparkling Shiraz
2000 Geoffroy Millesme Brut
Seppelt’s Para Port, Bottling No 114 (auction purchase)
Either 1982 Sassicaia or Leoville Las Cases
1993 Mount Pleasant Maurice O’Shea or maybe a 1982 Tahbilk if I can locate it
1970 Chateau Musar (very, very low ullage)
An old Rioja from the 70’s or 80’s
2011 Domaine Weinbach Riesling ‘Schlossburg’ and/or an old German Riesling
Merry Christmas one and all.
We’re opening the following for Xmas Day, with 15 guests.. They are all single bottles, so it’s first in..
